ELIZABETH CITY, NC- The Cheyney University Lady Wolves captured their first victory of the season, nipping the Elizabeth City State Lady Vikings 66-64 Thursday evening at RL Vaughan Center.
Cheyney (1-1) used late push down the back end of the game en route the two-point win. After trailing 32-25 at the intermission, the Lady Wolves went on to outscore ECSU 41-32 after the break. The game had five lead changes in the second half and although Cheyney did not score a bucket from the field after a layup by Desiree Asberry with 4:27 to go, ECSU failed to convert on any shots at the basket in the waning minutes.
The Lady Vikings made a late run behind seven quick points (two free throws, a layup and a three-pointer) by Courtney Scott with under 49 second left. April Whitaker scored a basket with 11 seconds remaining to cut the deficit to two points and had the chance to trim it to a point but missed the free throw. ECSU had one last possession but did not get a shot off as time expired.
Courtney Scott finished with a career high 14 points while Joyce Freeman had a team high 18. Briana Glover also tallied 14 points in the loss.
