ELIZABETH CITY, NC - Elizabeth City State University used a 14-0 run midway through the first half and parlayed that into a 63-52 victory over the division leading Lady Bulldogs of Bowie State University (12-4 / 7-4 CIAA / 3-1 East). The win, ECSU's first in the division (1-3), puts the Lady Vikings record at 9-10 overall and 2-8 in the CIAA.
Bowie State's first half offense was as flat as the tire on the bus that transported the Lady Bulldogs to Elizabeth City State. After spotting Bowie State a 7-0 advantage, Elizabeth City State scored seven unanswered points to tie the game at 7-7. From there, the Lady Vikings outscored the Lady Bulldogs 17-4 over the next four minutes to take a 24-11 lead by the 8:08 mark. Sharde Brown gave Elizabeth City State their largest lead of the first half (29-13) but Bowie State did manage to trim the deficit to 30-20 by halftime. Bowie State hit just seven-of 29 from the field (24.1 percent) and five-of-10 from the charity stripe. Elizabeth City State converted 10-of-26 first half field goals (38.5 percent), which included five-of-eight behind the arc and five-of-six from the free throw line. ECSU All-American Celeste Trahan was strapped with foul trouble in the first 20 minutes, picking up three and was held scoreless. Sha-Teisa Sharpe picked up the slack, topping ECSU with 10 first period points.
Trahan made ECSU history at the 13:36 mark of the second half scoring her 2,000 career point on a spinning jumper in the paint and put the Lady Vikings 43-30. Trahan ended the contest with a game-high 16 points and 11 rebounds and Sharpe added 14 points.
Sophomore Bianca Lee led Bowie State with 20 points and junior Markeya Watson chipped in eight points and seven rebounds for the Lady Bulldogs.
