ELIZABETH CITY, NC- The University of the District of Columbia Lady Firebirds earned split in the season series with Elizabeth City State with a 55-51 win over the Lady Vikings Thursday evening at the R.L. Vaughan Center.
ECSU was plagued by turnovers, committing 21 of their 26 miscues in the first half. That led to 19 points for the Lady Firebirds (10-4) who closed the first stanza on a 9-0 run to gain a 28-20 halftime advantage. In the second half sophomore guard Joyce Freeman scored 11 points over a six minute span and with a three-pointer at the 13:23 mark ECSU had trimmed the lead to a basket (36-34). With 11:12 left in the game a jumper by Freeman have the Lady Vikings a 39-38 lead, their first since the first half. ECSU held a five-point advantage with 4:12 to go but was then held scoreless as UDC went ahead for good. A late three-pointer by Whitney Stokes with six seconds remaining brought ECSU within two but Tiffany Church iced the game with two free throws end the contest.
Joyce Freeman finished with a career high of 19 points, 14 of which came in the second half of play. Celeste Trahan collected her 74th career double-double with game highs of 20 points and 11 rebounds.
Devaughn Hailey topped the Lady Firebirds with 12 points, the only UDC player in double figures.
