NCCU LADY EAGLES DEFEAT ECSU LADY VIKINGS 89-72

CHARLOTTE, NC- The North Carolina Central University Lady Eagles downed the Elizabeth City State University Lady Vikings 89-72 to capture the CIAA crown Saturday evening at Bobcats Arena.

The Vikings shot just 26% from the field in the first half and for the game committed 22 turnovers which led to 29 points for the Lady Eagles. NC Central, who at one point led by a whopping 28 points, never trailed in the game.

After trading baskets for the first few possessions, the Lady Eagles went on a 16-2 run to earn a 16 point advantage. In the midst of that, Celeste Trahan picked up her second foul with 14:35 to go, and was forced to sit the remainder of the half. The Lady Eagles continued to score and press defensively building a 22-point lead (49-27) by the intermission.

In the second half ECSU managed to outscore the Lady Eagles 45-40 but unfortunately the first half deficit was too much to overcome. Trahan scored 24 points in the second stanza to finish with a game high 28 points. Deanna Price and Ashley Bowman finished with 17 and 15 points respectively. Price and Trahan were both named to the All-Tournament Team.

Cassie King, who was tabbed as the Tournament MVP, finished with a double-double of 25 points and 10 rebounds. LaQuanda Williams and Jasmine Newkirk netted 23 and 17 respectively while Jori Nwachukwu chipped in 10 points and 11 rebounds.

As the #4 seed in the South Atlantic Region, Lady Vikings (21-9) will await an at-large bid, when the Division II Playoff Championship field is announced Sunday evening.
