PETERSBURG, VA- The Virginia State University Lady Trojans handed the Elizabeth City State University Lady Vikings their first divisional loss of the season with an 74-69 win Saturday afternoon at Daniel Gymnasium.
Virginia State opened up its largest lead of the game (38-27) on a 3-pointer by Janae Johnson with 1:36 remaining in the first half. After trailing 38-30 at the intermission, the Lady Vikings opened up the second half on a 14-3 run that gave them a 44-41 lead with 14:09 left the game. Johnson would the tie the game with another 3-pointer on the Lady Trojans next possession and then took the lead for good on a jumper by Janiya Bellard with 13:09 remaining. Ultimately VSU was able to keep the Lady Vikings at bay on the strength of their shooting from long range. The Lady Trojans were 13-30 from downtown while ECSU failed to connect from behind the 3-point arc, going 0-12.
Virginia State (8-16, CIAA 5-12) was led by Johnson's hot shooting with 25 points which included 7 three-pointers. LaQurisha Gray and Monique Mason added 12 and 14 points, respectively.
Deanna Price led the Lady Vikings with a team high 22 points while Tanika Hudgins added a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds.
