ELIZABETH CITY, NC- The Elizabeth City State University Lady Vikings dropped their first game of the season to the Lady Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith 52-47 Tuesday night at the R.L. Vaughan Center.
Kyria Buford, the reigning CIAA Player of the Week, scored a game high 26 points and was the only Lady Golden Bull to net double figures. With the win JCSU improves to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the CIAA.
After trailing by three at the break, JCSU claimed their first lead on the second half on a jumper by Buford with 8:51 to go and they would remain in front for the duration. By the 5:14 mark the visitor's advantage had ballooned to nine (48-39). The Lady Vikings then went on a run and closed the gap to one (48-47) on a Cheniece Arthur jumper with 1:30 to go but that would represent their last score. Ashley Chase hit four free throws in the final minute to seal the win for Johnson C. Smith.
Shaquella Johnson paced ECSU with a team high 13 points off the bench while Celeste Trahan notched her 64th double-double of 11 points and 12 rebounds on 4 of 8 shooting. Cheniece Arthur chipped in with 10 points in the loss.
