Final Stats
RICHMOND, VA- The Elizabeth City State University Lady Vikings improved to 13-5 overall (CIAA 10-1) with a 68-57 win over Virginia Union University Saturday night at Barco-Steven Hall.
The Lady Vikings placed four players in double figures with Celeste Trahan leading the way with game highs of 14 points and 16 rebounds. That double-double marked the 54th of her career. Tanika Hudgins added 13 points while both Deanna Price and Ashley Bowman contributed 10 points each.
ECSU, who led by 12 points 33-21 at the half, began the second stanza with a 3-pointer by Deanna Price for the largest margin of the game. The Lady Panthers (6-9, CIAA 3-7) would get back into the game by out-rebounding ECSU 33-21 in the second half. Virginia Union would slowly chip away at the lead and with a three-pointer by Ashley Hill with 8:49 remaining, ECSU only held a 47-45 advantage. Celeste Trahan would give the Lady Vikings a much needed basket with a rebound and a put-back after a missed free throw at the 8:35 mark. Over the next few minutes, the Lady Panthers would draw either iron or the Lady Vikings defense missing their next seven shot attempts, four of which were due to a miniature block party by Trahan (2), Price and Hudgins. ECSU went on an 11-2 run over the next two minutes to push the lead back to 13 and they would hold a double digit lead until game's end.
The Lady Panthers were paced by Katchona Johnson and Denae Kennedy with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
The Lady Vikings will hit the road for a key divisional match-up against Bowie State University on Tuesday, January 30th. Tip off is slated for 5:30pm at A.C. Jordan Arena. For more information on ECSU Athletics, visit www.ecsuvikings.com.
