FAYETTEVILLE, NC- The Fayetteville State University Lady Broncos placed five in double figures in a 101-86 win over Elizabeth City State University Saturday night at Capel Arena.
The loss snaps the Lady Vikings' win streak at four games and gives ECSU their first conference loss of the season.
After five lead changes very early in the game, the Lady Broncos put together two big runs to distance themselves from the Lady Vikings in the first half. The second run began with 4:45 remaining in the half with the score 37-34 in favor of Fayetteville State. From that point until the intermission the Lady Broncos outscored ECSU 19-4 to take a 56-38 lead at the break. In the second half the Lady Vikings would outscore the Lady Broncos by three (48-45) but ultimately the 18-point halftime deficit would prevail in the favor of the home team.
For the game the Lady Viking shot only 38% from the floor and committed a season high 44 turnovers. The Lady Broncos (11-5, CIAA 7-2) also held the rebounding advantage 57-49 and their reserves outscored the Lady Vikings' bench 35-22. Rebecca Charles, who scored 16 of her team high 22 points in the first half, paced Fayetteville State with 18 points and 7 rebounds. Chelsea Jeter and Tenisha McArthur posted double-doubles of 12 points, 15 rebounds and 13 points, 10 rebounds, respectively.
Tiffany Smith had the second best outing of her career in a lady Viking uniform with a game high 37 points and 12 rebounds. Whitney Johnson was the only other ECSU player in double figures with 10 points off the bench.
