ELIZABETH CITY, NC- The Elizabeth City State University Lady Vikings used a solid second half to come from behind a defeat Johnson C. Smith University 55-50 Saturday night at the RL Vaughan Center.
After taking a 2-0 lead on the first basket of the game, the Lady Golden Bulls went onto dominate the first stanza and take a half time lead of 33-22.The Lady Vikings trailed the entire second half until an 8-0 run which was capped by a Tanika Hudgins 3-pointer tied the game at 38 apiece with 11:54 remaining. The Lady Vikings would take the lead for good on a go ahead lay-up by Celeste Trahan at the 10:23 mark. After that JCSU would chip the Lady Viking lead to 2 points on two different occasions but ECSU would hold on for the five point win to take the season series from the Lady Golden Bulls. ECSU would outscore JCSU 33 -17 in the second half.
Despite the 5-point loss, JCSU dominated the backboards with a 65-39 rebounding edge. Ultimately the Lady Vikings were able to capitalize on 27 Lady Golden Bull turnovers by converting them into 22 points. All-American center Celeste Trahan registered her 46th career double-double with a team high 25 points and 15 rebounds. She also posted a career best 7 blocks in 39 minutes of play. Ashley Bowman was the only other Lady Viking to register double figures with 10 points to go along with 7 steals.
Brittany Sumpter paced JCSU (6-3, CIAA 1-2) with 18 points and while Demetria Bell posted a double-double of 10 points and 15 rebounds. Rochelle Bodie fell one basket short of her own double-double with 8 points and 19 rebounds.
