SALISBURY, NC- The Elizabeth City State University Lady Vikings defeated the Livingstone College Lady Blue Bears 83-80 in overtime Thursday night at William Trent Gymnasium.
This was the second time in as many years that the feisty Lady Blue Bears took ECSU to overtime on their home floor. On February 7, 2006, Tiffany Smith scored a career high 47 points to power ECSU past Livingstone 121-113 in overtime. On Thursday night, All-American center Celeste Trahan tied her career high of 33 points to go along with 9 rebounds, 2 blocks and 5 steals in 36 minutes before fouling out with 37 second left in the extra session.
After missing a free throw with 19 seconds to play which would have broke the tie in regulation, Joyce Freeman came up big in overtime by connecting on back-to-back three pointers to account for 6 of the Lady Vikings' 11 overtime points. Freeman finished the evening with 13 points while Tanika Hudgins added 11 to round out the double figure scorers for ECSU. Senior guard DeAnna Chestnut amassed a career high 11 assists while logging the most minutes (40) of any Lady Viking Thursday evening.
Livingstone (1-5, CIAA 0-2) was paced by Jonta Moss and Lina Brown with 22 and 20 points respectively.
The Lady Vikings (2-2, CIAA 2-0) will return to action on December 1-2, 2006 at the Lady Eagle Classic hosted by North Carolina Central in Durham, NC. For more information on ECSU Athletics, visit www.ecsuvikings.com.
