ELIZABETH CITY, NC- The Elizabeth City State University defeated Claflin University 81-57 Saturday night at the R.L. Vaughan Center in Elizabeth City, NC.
With the win the Lady Vikings avenge a 76-69 loss to the Pantherettes back on December 11, 2005 in Orangeburg, SC.
The Lady Vikings shot 55% from the field and due to some tenacious defense, held their opponent to just 30% for the game. ECSU dominated the post with 46 points coming in the paint via 24 points from Celeste Trahan and 20 points from Tiffany Smith. The Lady Vikings also held the edge in points off turnovers (34 to 22) and fast break points (12 to 4). Both Trahan and Smith pulled down 10 rebounds apiece while junior guard Deanna Price scored 8 points and dished out 11 assists. For Claflin, Marvetta Edwards led the way with 17 points as the Pantherettes fall to 7-8 overall.
The Lady Vikings (3-5 overall, CIAA 1-0) will return to action this coming Tuesday, January 10, 2006 as they will play host to the Lady Bears of Shaw University. This will be the Lady Vikings' division opener and their first time facing the Lady Bears since the 2005 CIAA Championship game. Tip-off is slated for 5:30pm in the R.L. Vaughan Center.
