PETERSBURG, VA- The Elizabeth City State University Lady Vikings earned their first divisional win of the season, downing Virginia State University 79-62 Thursday night in Petersburg, VA.
The story of the game for the Lady Vikings was the play of junior guard Deanna Price, who score 16 of her season high 22 points in the first half. Although there were 6 lead exchanges early in the first stanza the Lady Trojans would take a 21-18 lead on a lay-up by Felicia Gibbs at the 10:27 mark. However after two free throws by Tiffany Smith were followed by a three-pointer by Price, the Lady Vikings would not relinquish the lead for the remainder of the contest. ECSU dominated the points in the paint (54 to 20) mostly due to Smith's 19 points off the bench and a routine double-double from All-American candidate Celeste Trahan who finished with 21 points and 17 rebounds. The Lady Vikings also held the Lady Trojans at bay collecting 24 points off of turnovers. Virginia State slips to 1-13 overall while ECSU improves to 4-6 overall and 2-1 in CIAA play.
The Lady Vikings will return to action on Tuesday, January 17, 2006 as they travel to Raleigh, NC to take on Saint Augustine's College. Game time is slated for 5:30pm. For more information on ECSU Athletics, log onto www.ecsuvikings.com.
