PETERSBURG, VA- Virginia State University quarterback Michael Terry passed for 234 yards and two touchdowns as they upended the Elizabeth City State University Vikings 26-6 Saturday night at Rogers Stadium in Petersburg, VA.
What initially appeared to be the makings of a defensive battle ended late in the first half when the Trojans were the beneficiaries of two interceptions. First Michael Terry hauled in a 94-yard touchdown from Michel Terry to break the scoreless tie with 2:27 remaining in the second quarter. Just twelve ticks later, Keith Johnson returned a 25-yard interception for another score at the 2:15 mark. The Trojans had to opt for a two-point conversion after excessive celebration put them out of extra point range. The pass failed, however VSU would strike again with 35 seconds remaining via another interception and the Trojans would go up 16-0 at the half after a field goal by Musa Conteh as time expired.
Conteh would add another field goal at the 5:28 mark of the 3rd quarter and Jerome Choice rang up his second touchdown pass of the night to push the score to 26-0 in favor of VSU (3-3, CIAA 2-1). The Vikings narrowly avoided the shutout when with 2:15 left in the game as Marvin Jackson took a 33 yard pass from Dan Herlihy in for a touchdown. Dennis Hamilton racked up his third game of over 100-yards in the last four weeks, finishing with 102 yards on 13 carries, all of which cam in the first half. Dan Herlihy finished with a season high 230 yards passing while junior defensive back James Powell led all defenders with 11 tackles including 2 for a loss of three yards.
The Vikings (1-5, CIAA 0-3) return to action this Saturday, October 8, 2005 as they will play host to Bowie State University. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30pm at Roebuck Stadium in Elizabeth City, NC. For more information on ECSU athletics, log onto www.ecsuvikings.com.
