RICHMOND, VA- The Virginia Union University Panther defeated the Elizabeth City State University Viking 14-6 Saturday afternoon at Hovey Field in Richmond, VA.
The Panthers improve to 3-7 overall and 2-5 in the CIAA.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Panthers broke a scoreless tie on a 7-yard touchdown pass from John Greer to Phillip Taylor at the 7:09 mark. Virginia Union would strike again with 1:55 remaining in the first half when Grier connected with Steven Miller for a 26-yard score. The Vikings' only score would come when Dan Herlihy connected with Aaron Kirkland for his only reception of the day, an 18-yard touchdown that capped a 10-play, 85-yard drive with 14:14 remaining in the game.
The afternoon was laced with penalties as the two team combined for 21 flags for a total of 269 yards. ECSU would suffer mostly due to their inability to capitalize on opportunities going 1-5 in the red zone on Saturday. The other four red zone chances yielded three turnovers and a missed field goal ending the Vikings' hopes of a fourth quarter comeback.
Offensively for ECSU Jerome Smith carried the ball 17 times for 78 yards while Chris Carter caught 4 passes for 67 yards. The Vikings finish the 2005 season with an overall record of 2-8 and a conference record of 1-6.
