SHAW BEARS RUSH PAST ECSU VIKINGS 24-7

Oct. 15, 2005

Stats

RALEIGH, NC- Shaw University totaled 318 yards of total offense in route to a 24-7 homecoming victory over Elizabeth City State Saturday afternoon at Garner High School in Garner, NC.

Offensively ECSU was solid totaling 293 total yards and nearly doubling the Bears in time of possession (37:42 to 22:18 for Shaw). Additionally the Vikes topped the Bears in first downs, 23 to 16. However costly turnovers doomed the Vikings, giving them their seventh straight loss of the season.

Down 3 to nothing, Dan Herlihy completed a 37-yard touchdown pass to Marvin Jackson to give the Vikings the lead with ten seconds remaining in the first quarter. Then at the 11:52 mark in the second stanza, Reginald Price scored the first of his three rushing touchdowns on the afternoon and the score would stand at 10-7 in favor of the home team at the intermission. The Vikings would momentarily gain momentum in the third quarter after an interception by Shawn Dickerson ended the Bears' opening drive of the second half. Then Shaw's Davis Coleman returned the favor by intercepting a Dan Herlihy pass that would result in a score for the Bears via a 3-yard TD run by Price.

On the ensuing ECSU possession, Herlihy orchestrated an impressive 18-play, 61-yard drive that consumed ten minutes. Then with the ball on the Bears' four yard line, Herlihy was again intercepted, and again the turnover led to a Price touchdown run, this one for 3 yards after a 11-play, 92-yard drive. Ultimately the Bears capitalized in 4 of their 5 red zone opportunities while ECSU was 0-1 on the afternoon.

Both teams relied heavily on their respective ground games on Saturday with Price pacing the Bears with 98 yards on 16 carries and three rushing touchdowns. Brandon Fields, who average 5.5 yard per carry, led ECSU with 28 touches for 154 rushing yards. The two quarterbacks, Dan Herlihy and Jermonty Kimbrough, combined for 49 attempts and completed 19 passes. The Bears improve to 5-3 (CIAA 4-1) while the Vikings fall to 1-7 (CIAA 0-5).

Elizabeth City State University will return to Roebuck Stadium for Homecoming 2005 Saturday, October 22 as they will play host to Saint Paul's College at 2:00pm. For more information on ECSU athletics, log onto www.ecsuvikings.com.
