RICHMOND, Va. – Elizabeth City State was unable to overcome a fast start by Virginia Union, falling 70–32 Thursday evening in CIAA women's basketball action at Barco-Stevens Hall.
The Panthers jumped out early, holding ECSU scoreless from the field in the opening quarter and building an 18–5 advantage after one. Virginia Union continued to apply pressure offensively and defensively, extending the lead at halftime and maintaining control throughout the contest.
Despite the result, the Vikings continued to compete and received contributions from multiple players off the bench.
Naja Ngongba led ECSU with seven points, while
Kailyn Young added six points, four rebounds, and four assists.
Tionna Pettus pulled down a team-high nine rebounds to go along with three points.
Elizabeth City State found some rhythm at the free-throw line, converting 14-of-20 attempts, including a perfect 8-for-8 showing in the fourth quarter. The Vikings also outscored Virginia Union in bench points during stretches of the game, finishing with 21 points from reserves.
Virginia Union shot 46.3 percent from the field and capitalized on turnovers, scoring 26 points off ECSU miscues to fuel the victory.
Elizabeth City State falls to 4–15 overall and 1–9 in CIAA play, while Virginia Union improves to 11–6 overall and 6–5 in conference action.
