ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – Elizabeth City State fell to Virginia State, 58–45, Saturday afternoon in CIAA women's basketball action at the R. L. Vaughan Center.
The Vikings opened the game strong, holding the Trojans to just seven points in the first quarter and taking a 12–7 lead. ECSU continued to battle throughout, but a difficult second quarter proved costly as Virginia State used a 19–2 run to take control heading into halftime.
Elizabeth City State responded with its best stretch of the game in the third quarter, outscoring the Trojans 20–13 to cut into the deficit and keep the contest within reach. However, Virginia State answered in the fourth quarter with efficient shooting and transition offense to seal the road win.
Jada Clark led ECSU with eight points, four rebounds, five assists, and two steals, while
Kailyn Young added nine points off the bench on a perfect 4-of-4 performance from the free-throw line.
Laniya Scales contributed seven points, and
Tionna Pettus finished with six points and five rebounds.
The Vikings received solid bench production, scoring 22 points from reserves, and shot 92.9 percent from the free-throw line. Virginia State capitalized on turnovers, scoring 26 points off ECSU miscues, and finished with a 30–22 advantage in points in the paint.
Elizabeth City State moves to 4–14 overall and 1–8 in CIAA play, while Virginia State improves to 13–4 overall and 7–2 in conference action.
