FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Elizabeth City State University volleyball team picked up its second consecutive victory Saturday afternoon, defeating Claflin University 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-22) during CIAA Round-Up play inside Felton J. Capel Arena.
The win marks the first back-to-back victories of the season for ECSU (2-11, 2-3 CIAA), who hit a solid .198 as a team and held Claflin (1-11, 1-4 CIAA) to just a .022 attack percentage across the match.
Andrea Rose and Jorja Hoffman led the Viking offense with nine kills apiece, while Clarke Blakemore added seven kills and a pair of aces in another strong performance at the net. Serenity Lunnermon kept the offense flowing with 25 assists, and Raven Bailey anchored the defense with a team-high 10 digs.
ECSU controlled the opening set behind 13 kills on a .233 hitting clip and never looked back, combining steady defense and efficient passing to close out the straight-set sweep. Jalayah Hamby provided a spark with a perfect 4-for-4 hitting day (.1000) along with two blocks, while Rose and Blakemore each contributed multiple blocks at the net.
The Vikings totaled 34 kills, 28 assists, 35 digs, and seven aces in one of their most complete outings of the season.
Up next for Elizabeth City State, the Vikings will hit the road to face Lincoln (Pa.) on Thursday, October 9 at 7:30 p.m. The CIAA matchup will be held at Oxford Area High School in Oxford, Pennsylvania.
