Kellum joins the 1000th career assist club

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. - Elizabeth Kellum officially inducts herself into the 1000th career assist club and cleared the pathway for a Viking victory over Chowan University in straight sets at the R.L. Vaughan Center on Tuesday evening. The junior right-side hitter/setter also posted double-double action with 12 kills and 20 assists. The Vikings improve to a 5-6 season (0-0 CIAA) as Chowan drops to 3-5 (0-0 Conference Carolinas) on the season.

Initially, the Vikings found the rhythm they needed as Chowan struggled with early attack errors.  After a series of rallies that brought the score to 11 all, the Vikings captialized on a 13-4 run to close the first set 25-16.

Two kills and a service ace from Chowan put the Vikings in an early  3-0 deficit at the start of the second set. CIAA Setter of the Week (week #2) Kayleigh Sullivan connected with Kellum and  senior middle blocker Alexis Elliott for a pair of kills a piece to bring the score to 4-5. Chowan responed with a 4-0 run of their own in which the Vikings suffered two attack errors. Chowan took advantage of the miscues and shadowed ECSU leading 16-13 as teams rallied fiercely until a break in Chowan's defense with nine kills combined from  Week #1 & #2 CIAA Offensive Players of the Week Jada Rouse and Victoria White extending the Vikings past Chowan 19-18. The Vikings challenged Chowan's net defense and amassed six straight kills and one ace to close out the second set 25-20.

In the third set, both teams traded three-and-done rallies bringing the tie-game tally to 16. The Vikings were able to push beyond the tit for tat and force Chowan back into more errors at the net to secure the win within the last points .

The Vikings return to the Vaughan Center on Thursday night to face off with Northern Division opponent Virginia Union. First serve is slated for 6 p.m.
