ELIZABETH CITY, NC- The Vikings Volleyball team took down Trinity Washington in three sets at home on Saturday afternoon (25-9, 25-8, 25-19), improving to a 7-2 overall record.
"Today's win was a great way to finish a 3-0 week," said head coach
David Brooks. We were able to get some of our younger players some valuable experience that will help us later down the road."
The Lady Vikings (7-2, 0-0 CIAA) were led by
Jada Rouse with seven kills and six digs. Senior setter
Asia Jones ended the match with 18 assists and one block.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Vikings completely dominated the first set from start to finish. Though Trinity fought back during each point, the Vikings quickly secured a 20-7 lead.
Rouse served for most of the set on ECSU's way to winning the set 25-9.
The Vikings went up 10-3 in set two after a pair of aces from
Elizabeth Kellum, and multiple kills from a host of players forced Trinity to call a timeout. The Vikings took charge out of the timeout and went on an eleven-point service run from senior
Asia Jones before ending with a hitting error taking a 21-7 lead. A kill from Rouse, outside hitter
Janeal Homer, and an explosive set point kill from junior middle
Alexus Elliott was enough to put the set away at 25-8.
The Vikings started the third set on a rollercoaster. Unable to get a smooth momentum going, both teams battled it out for the lead with five points separating the score at 10-5 ECSU. Though the Vikings were able to finally pull away, Trinity fought back and tied the score at 12-12. Multiple unforced errors kept both teams within reach of each other, but neither team achieved more than a three-point scoring run. A service run by Homer took the Vikings to a five-point lead, forcing Trinity to call a timeout at 20-13. Trinity bounced back after the timeout and cut the lead to 22-18. A kill from Elliott gave the Vikings the momentum needed to set up a match point. A solid tip behind the block from Rouse ended the set at 25-19.
"Today's game was one of our easier matches," said freshman
Mariah Griffin. "We swept Trinity but realized in the last set not to underestimate any team and make unnecessary eros. We're playing Mid-Atlantic Christian on Monday with the goal of not giving away many points and playing our game the whole time."
The Vikings will be back in action on Monday at 6 pm in the R.L. Vaughan Center to host Mid-Atlantic Christian University.
