ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. -- In the first home match of the 2019 season, the Elizabeth City State University Viking volleyball team picked up their first win of the young season by defeating Regent University, in straight sets, inside of the R.L. Vaughan Center on Thursday evening.

The Vikings had their best hitting performance of the year in sets two and three as the Vikings hit .333 and .318 respectfully. ECSU limited the Royals to .000 hitting percentage including limiting Regent to a -.286 percentage in set two.
ECSU dominated Regent in every statistic in the game including kills (30-22), aces (10-7), blocks (5-1), assists (25-17), and digs (27-24).
Individually, the Vikings were led by
Kaylee Williams and
Jahera Dangerfield with seven kills a piece. Freshman
Chayse Tyler registered three service aces for the evening. Ma-Tewah Tamba had her best outing in a Viking uniform in 2019 as the sophomore registered six kills, two service aces, and a team-high eight digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
All three sets followed the same script for the Vikings. Regent and ECSU battled in the beginning portions of the set before the Vikings would utilize a spurt to pull ahead. In the first set, it was a 4-0 run that gave the Vikings a five point advantage 19-14. ECSU would pull away to win 25-17. In the second set, ECSU utilized a 7-0 run to pull ahead, 21-11, and carried that momentum to win 25-13. In the final set, Regent and ECSU battled to an 18-18 stalemate before the experience of the Vikings came through and a 5-0 run put the Royals out of reach as the Vikings paced to a 25-20 win.

The Vikings will take a road trip to the mountains of North Carolina to face off against Lees-McRae College and King University on Saturday and Sunday. ECSU will have their next home match on October 2nd as they welcome in CIAA foe Lincoln University to the R.L. Vaughan Center.
