Asia Deal scored a team high 16 points as the Elizabeth City State University basketball team dropped their Northern Division contest to Virginia State on Saturday inside of the VSU Multipurpose Center.

Asia Deal led the scoring for ECSU with 16 points,
Jalyn Brown notched 11 and
Naterria Luster scored 10.
Naterria Luster led the effort on the boards as the junior pulled down seven rebounds on the afternoon.

Yazmen Hannah scored a game high 19 for the Trojans and Chrisanna Green registered a double double behind a 15 point and 13 rebound effort.

ECSU shot 37 percent from the floor and 33 percent from behind the three-point arc.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter
The Vikings would score the first bucket of the contest but then go on a 6:04 field goal drought while the Trojans would jump out to a 12-5 lead. ECSU would score the next four points to pull within three. Virginia State would then outscore the Vikings by two to lead 19-14 at the end of the first quarter of play.

Second Quarter
The second ten minutes was a defensive struggle for both teams. ECSU would close the gap to three at half time but only after scoring 8 points during the second quarter. The Vikings would hold Virginia State to 14 percent shooting but was unable to close the gap by anymore due to only shooting 21 percent from the field during the quarter.

Third Quarter
Coming out of halftime the Vikings would go on a 6-2 run to take their first lead since the 9:17 mark of the first quarter, 28-27.
Asia Deal registered a three-point basket with 3:27 left in the third to give the Vikings a four-point lead, 38-34, which was the largest lead of the game for the Vikings.

Fourth Quarter
Virginia State started the quarter on a 14-4 run to jump out to a five-point lead with 6:34 left in the quarter.
Asia Deal scored five unanswered points to bring the Vikings to within one with 3:52 to play.
Jalyn Brown scored a three-point basket with 1:47 to give the Vikings their final lead of the afternoon, 55-54. Virginia State held the Vikings scoreless over the final 1:47 and would take the win 59-55.

ECSU will be back in action on Wednesday night as they take the road trip to Virginia Union to face off against the Panthers. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
