ECSU Women’s Basketball Battles Back for Win at Saint Augustine’s

Marks third straight win for Vikings; Most wins since 2014-2015 Campaign

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Elizabeth City State University women's basketball team rallied from a 12-point deficit in the third quarter to defeat CIAA-rival Saint Augustine's University, 66-54, in a non-conference matchup on Monday afternoon. The win marks the third straight for ECSU and the 10th win overall for the season which is the most wins for the program since the 2014-2015 season (12).

The Vikings (10-5, 2-2 CIAA) jumped out to a 21-12 lead in the first quarter behind seven points from DeNayia Holmes. The Falcons (2-10, 1-4 CIAA) would turn up the defensive pressure in the second ten minutes and held ECSU to just two points during that timeframe to take a 35-23 lead into the halftime break.

ECSU would answer in the third quarter by erasing the St. Augustine's lead and go up by nine by outscoring the Falcons 30-9 in the third quarter. The Vikings would continue the strong second half effort by outscoring St. Augustine's 13-10 in the final stanza.

"Today was a great game in terms of maturity for my players. We showed that we can fight from behind while playing on the road. We displayed a mental toughness as it would have been easy to fold but the team fought back and beat a fiery St. Augustine's team on the road" ECSU head women's basketball coach Antonio Davis said.

The difference maker in the contest was the effort at the free throw line as the Vikings would shoot 25-of-32 from the line for a 78.1 percent mark. The Falcons would counter with a 55 percent effort (11-of-20). The Vikings would also be more effective at turning turnovers into points, winning that effort by a 31-21 margin.

Asia Deal led the offensive attack for the Vikings by pouring in 19 points on a 6-for-13 shooting effort from the field and a perfect 7-of-7 mark from the free throw line. Jalyn Brown registered 14 points and DeNayia Holmes scored 11 to round out the double figure scoring effort for the Vikings.

The Vikings will continue on their six-game road trip by visiting Livingstone College on Thursday, January 10th for a 5:30 p.m. conference matchup.
