Cold Finish Stops Vikings At Chowan, 64-55

MURFREESBORO, N.C. (Jan. 19, 2019) – After 18 ties and 36 lead changes, an icy finish from the field by Elizabeth City State allowed Chowan to seize a 64-55 CIAA win in the Helms Center.

Junior forward John Maynor paced the Vikings (11-9, CIAA 6-2, North Div. 0-1) with 13 points and a team-high three steals while sophomore guard Justin Faison knocked down two of four long-range jumpers on his way to nine points.  Senior guard Shyheid Petteway totaled eight points with sophomore guard Shykeef Daniels chipping in seven.

Senior guard Corey Mendez hit three of four shots from the floor and hauled down a team-high eight rebounds for ECSU which fell for only the second time in its last eight games.

Petteway drained a 3-point jumper with 11:42 remaining to give the Vikings their 16th and final lead at 48-46.  ECSU would net just seven more points down the stretch.

The Hawks put together a quick 7-0 run capped by a trey by junior guard Timothy Bing to seize a 53-48 lead with 8:40 left.  A jump shot in the paint by sophomore guard Brandon Mayhan pushed the Chowan lead to 62-53 with 2:52 on the clock.

Bing, who snared nine rebounds, and junior forward Michael Kelly, who notched a double-double with a game-high 10 rebounds, led the Hawks (11-4, CIAA 4-3, North Div. 1-0) with 16 points apiece.  Sophomore guard Gus Rowland added 11 points plus game highs of six assists and four steals.  Senior guard finished with 10 points and eight rebounds to help Chowan construct a 39-30 rebounding advantage.

ECSU visits Lincoln Wednesday night for a CIAA doubleheader.  The Viking and Lion women tip off at 5:30 with the men's teams to follow at 7:30.
