BOWIE, Md.  – The Elizabeth City State University football team was ousted by Bowie State University, 49 - 7, during its final game of the season. With the loss, ECSU concludes its season 1-7 overall and 0-5 in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association; while the Bulldogs advance to the conference championship next Saturday on Salem, Va. Â
The Vikings started the game with a three and out on offense, before Bowie State took the its opening drive 36-yards down the field in two plays to record the first points of the game with 11:23 remaining in the first quarter.
The Bulldogs then opened the flood gates. BSU recorded scores at the 7:59 and 2:05 marks, in the first quarter and at the 8:21, 2:27, and 1:03 marks in the second quarter to take a 42-0 lead into halftime.ECSU recorded its first score of the game in the second half with .7 seconds remaining in the contest to avoid the shutout with a run up the middle by senior running back
Deshon Saunders.
Offensively, the Vikings were led Saunders with 83-yards rushing total, and 30 total passing yards; while defensively, sophomore safety
Taeyonn Reynolds spearheaded the team with nine total tackles.The ECSU defense held the Bulldogs to only seven points and 111 total yards during the second half. The Vikings finished with 207 (81 rushing/126 passing) total yards offensively; while gifting BSU 473 (100 rushing/373 passing) total yards for the game. Â
