Jalyn Brown netted her 1,000
th career point on a layup just 1:49 into the game to highlight Elizabeth City State University's 72-61 rout of Newport News Apprentice School in the Robert L. Vaughan Center.
Freshman guard
Sirenna Pitts came up with a steal and fed Brown, who entered the contest with 999 points, for her first points of the contest that pushed the ECSU lead to 9-2. The Vikings shot a sizzling 61.9% (13-21) from the floor in the period to race out to an insurmountable 33-10 lead. The Builders (1-2) managed just five field goals on 14 shots (35.7%) in the quarter.
Junior guard
DeNayia Holmes netted eight of her 10 points while junior forward
Devona Stell added seven during the balanced first-quarter assault. The 33 points were nine more than the previous team season high for the period which came in a season-opening loss to Gannon and seven more than the 26 notched in the final period against Puerto Rico Bayamon on November 11 which stood as the team's top output for a period.
A pair of free throws by senior guard
Karima Jackson extended the Viking lead to 50-16 with 17 ticks left in the half before junior guard Latrice Washington canned a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to make it 50-19 at the break.
Freshman forward
Azhante Rodgers notched her first career double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds plus three blocked shots as Viking head coach
Antonio O. Davis had a chance to play everyone on the bench.
Stell netted team-high 16 points and snared four rebounds before fouling out after just 19 minutes. Freshman guard
Asia Deal dished out a game-high six assists while chipping in 10 points and Holmes tallied five assists.
Pitts chipped in eight points, six rebounds and two assists while Brown finished with six points to run her career total to 1,005.
Freshman guard Jordan Wilson led the Builders with 16 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and three steals as the visitors put four players in double figure scoring. Washington totaled 13 points and junior center Sabre Clegg worked inside for a dozen points. Sophomore guard Taylor McCaslin added 10 points.
It was the first game for the Vikings following a nine-day Thanksgiving layoff and marked the fourth game of a six-game homestand. ECSU followed a loss with a victory for the third time in as many tries.
ECSU hosts Virginia University of Lynchburg on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Vaughan Center before entering CIAA play on Monday in a women's/men's doubleheader against new conference member Claflin University. The women's game tips off at 5:30 p.m. with the men to follow at 7:30.
