Women's Basketball Comeback Falls Just Short vs. Barton

DeNayia Holmes leads Viking scorers with 13.

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – The Elizabeth City State University women's basketball team rallied from a nine-point deficit to take a lead in the fourth quarter but fell short against the visiting Barton College Bulldogs, 63-58, on Monday night inside of the R.L. Vaughan Center.

Barton and ECSU were tied at halftime at 29 apiece but Barton (5-0) came out of the halftime break and outscored the Vikings by nine in the third quarter behind the efforts of Kianna Wynn who scored 12 points in the stanza.

ECSU (2-3) came out in the final quarter and commenced to go on a 10-0 run with points from Devona Stell, DeNayia Holmes, Markeia Porter and Asia Deal. Barton and the Vikings would go back and forth before Bulldogs went ahead for the final time with 1:56 remaining and outscored ECSU 6-1 in the final two minutes.

The Bulldogs offensive attack was led by Wynn who scored 26 points, 24 in the second half, on 13-of-23 shooting. Shanika Peterkin was the only other Barton player in double figures with 12 points, on 6-of-11 shooting, while posting a rare triple-double with a game-high 14 rebounds and an incredible 11 blocked shots. Barton scored 38 of their 63 points in the paint, while the Vikings held Barton to 24 percent shooting from behind the three-point line.

ECSU was led offensively by Holmes with 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting, senior guard Jalyn Brown with 11 points and Deal with 11. Stell and Porter also pitched in eight points. The Vikings scored 11 points off of 19 Barton turnovers and scored 10 fast break points.

Brown's 11-point effort left the senior just one-point shy of 1,000 points for her career.

The Vikings will be away from the court for nine days for the Thanksgiving break and will be back in action on November 28th as they will face Newport News Apprentice inside of the R.L. Vaughan Center. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m.
