Markeia Porter knocked down a free-throw with 38 seconds remaining in the contest as the Elizabeth City State University women's basketball team took a 67-66 lead and eventually won the game, 69-66 over the University of Mount Olive in the R. L. Vaughan Center on Saturday afternoon.
With the victory, the Vikings improve to 2-2 overall; while the Trojans fell to 1-2 on the season. For the game, ECSU outscored UMO 28-20 in points in the paint, 23-11 in points off turnovers, 10-7 in second chance points, 17-0 in bench points.
The Trojans and Elizabeth City State tied 4-4 in fast break points; while the fans saw nine lead changes and seven ties during the matchup. The Trojans finished the game shooting 41.7 percent from the field, 31 percent from behind the arc, and 77.8 percent from the charity stripe; while the Vikings closed out the game shooting 43.3 percent from the floor, 13.3 percent from downtown, and 78.9 percent from the line.
Elizabeth City State was spearheaded by junior forward
Naterria Luster, who recorded 21 points and eleven boards on the evening; while fellow junior forward and freshman guard
Asia Deal recorded 11 each in the win. The Vikings led by as much as four points with 3:09 remaining in the third quarter; while UMO led by as much as 12 with 3:15 remaining in the first half.
Elizabeth City State is scheduled to play host to Barton College Monday evening at 6 p.m. in the R. L. Vaughan Center.
