ELIZABETH CITY, NC- Bowie State University wrapped up the regular season with a convincing 63-42 win over Elizabeth City State University Saturday afternoon at Roebuck Stadium.
Kendall Jefferson set a new school record for the Bulldogs with 269 rushing yards on 24 carries. He finished the day with three rushing touchdowns and Bowie State also set a new school record for total yards with 732.
With the win the Bulldogs win the CIAA North and punch their ticket to the CIAA Football Championship next Saturday where they will face Winston-Salem State University. Game time is scheduled for 2pm at Durham County Stadium in Durham, NC.
As for this Saturday's game, the teams had to endure a two and a half hour weather (lightning) delay after the game was suspended at 1:38 EST. The contest was stopped with 14:10 left in the second quarter and the Bulldogs in front 21-7.
Taking its 1pm kickoff time and weather delay into account, Saturday's game lasted a total of 5 hours and 30 minutes.
When play resumed neither team could find a rhythm offensively and at the end of an abbreviated, five minute halftime, the score remained 21-7 in favor of Bowie State.
The Bulldogs went on to own the third quarter where they outscored the Vikings 28-14. Freshman quarterback Nyema Washington tossed of three of his four passing TDs in the third, for a 42-21 lead by the close of the quarter.
Johnny Nunn, Jr. hauled in a 40 yard scoring reception at the 6:32 mark only to have Jefferson respond with an electrifying 95 yard kickoff return for a score with 6:13 to go in the third quarter. After a Bulldog penalty and a good kickoff return by Lovie Banks-Rose, Jr gave the Vikings a short field, ECSU took all of nine seconds to score again; this time on a one play drive, a 50 yard passing TD from Daquan Neal to Nunn.
In his final home game at Roebuck Stadium, Lovie Banks-Rose Jr finished with 394 all-purpose yards, including two receiving touchdowns (10 catches/135 yards) and 259 yards on kickoff returns. Both of his scoring receptions (25 and 9 yards) came in the fourth quarter.
Both teams' starting quarterbacks had strong outings for their respective teams. BSU's Nyema Washington was 20 for 28 for 364 yards and 5 passing touchdowns while the Vikings' Daquan Neal finished the day with a career best 377 yards and 4 touchdowns passes.
Johnny Nunn had a personal best 150 yards on 5 receptions with 2 touchdowns in his final game in an ECSU uniform. Defensively for ECSU, senior Stephen Williams matched his career high with 17 tackles.
The Vikings finish the 2015 season at 4-5 overall and 2-6 in CIAA play.
