Oct. 24, 2015 Final Stats
MURFREESBORO, NC- Chowan University's Tyree Lee had 173 yards on the ground and a rushing touchdown as the Hawks triumphed over Elizabeth City State University 24-20 Saturday afternoon at Garrison Stadium.
Lee also scored what proved to be the game winner on a TD reception from Jordan Watkins with 6:12 remaining to give the Hawks their first ever win in their all-time series with Elizabeth City State. Entering Saturday's contest, the Vikings held a 7-0 record against the Hawks dating back to the 2008 season when Chowan joined the CIAA as a then football only conference member.
Lee, a junior transfer from Hampton, Virginia, accounted for 231 all-purpose yards for the Hawks who move to 5-3 overall and 3-2 in CIAA play. He was the recipient of a short shovel pass and an eluded tackle later scampered down the sideline for what would be the game winner.
ECSU's defense would stand its ground enough to give the offense three shots over the final 6:12 of regulation at a game winning drive. Trailing by four, the Vikings needed a touchdown on any of those possessions yet each ended with a turnover and the Hawks held on for the victory.
Defensively Darren Wilson led all performers with 13 tackles and 2 of the Vikings' 5 sacks on the afternoon. Stephen Williams had a sack for a loss of 11 yards and 10 tackles (7 solo).
Jeff Flores' second made field goal of the day came from a distance of 38 yards to give the Vikings a 20-17 lead with 9:53 left in the fourth quarter. In the first quarter, he nailed a 37 yarder at the 9:09 mark to give ECSU an early 3-0 advantage.
Unfortunately for ECSU, both field goals were negated by Lee on the Hawks' ensuing drives. In the opening quarter he put Chowan out in front capping a 4 play, 80 yard drive with an 18 yard rushing score to give the Hawks a 7-3 lead. They extended that lead with 1:55 left in the first on a 33 yard touchdown pass from Watkins to Damian Ellis.
The teams traded second quarter scores, a two yard rushing score by Daquan Neal and a 39 yard field goal by Nick Hahula and the Hawks held a 17-10 lead at the half.
The Vikings tied the game at 17 on a four yard TD run by Ra'sheed Rushing with 14:54 to go. That score was preceded by a Khayree Lundy interception which he returned 37 yards to the Chowan 48 with 29 seconds left in the third quarter.
The Vikings' offense posted their second highest total output of the season with 410 total yards but was only 2-4 on scoring opportunities in the red zone.
ECSU (4-3, CIAA 2-3) will return to action on Saturday, October 31 against Virginia Union University in Richmond, VA. Kickoff is scheduled for 1pm at Hovey Field.
