PETERSBURG, VA- Virginia State University scored 28 unanswered points and the Trojans cruised to a 41-14 victory over Elizabeth City State University Saturday afternoon at Rogers Stadium.
Kavon Bellamy scored the second of his three touchdowns on the afternoon with 44 seconds remaining in the first half to give the Trojans a 20-14 lead at the intermission.
With 4:50 left in the third quarter, Bellamy capped a 12 play, 70 yard drive that consumed over 6 minutes with a four yard touchdown reception for a 27-14 advantage. The Trojans went on to score twice in the fourth quarter, the latter being a 56 yard interception returned for six by Trevon Byron for the final point spread.
ECSU's offense struggled for consistency, scoring only one touchdown a 48-yard bomb from Tyrell Houghton to Montario Hunter with 3:40 to go in the opening quarter.
Aside from that the Vikings were 0-1 in their only trip to the red zone on Saturday. Their longest time of possession consumed only 3:41 and was also their most snaps (10) from scrimmage during a drive. Virginia State ran only ten more plays than ECSU (76-66) but held the edge in time of possession 36:51 to 23:09.
Six of the Trojans twelve drives on the afternoon covered more than 55 yards. Virginia State went 8-18 on third down conversions, went 5 of 6 on fourth downs and was 4-5 in red zone chances.
The Vikings only other score of the day came on a fumbled snap during a VSU punt attempt which Maliek Wright recovered in the end zone. That gave ECSU a 14-13 lead with 2:39 to go in the opening quarter.
