BOWIE STATE PREVAILS IN SEASON FINALE, TOPS ECSU 30-21

ELIZABETH CITY, NC- Bowie State University closed out the 2013 season with a 30-21 win over Elizabeth City State University on Senior Day at Roebuck Stadium.

The loss snaps ECSU's run of winning seasons at seven as the Vikings finish under .500 (4-6) for the first time since 2005. Even with the loss to the Bulldogs, ECSU wrapped up second place in the CIAA Northern Division with a 4-3 record in conference play.

Bowie State concludes the 2013 season at 5-5 overall with a 3-4 mark, good for third place in the CIAA North.

ECSU held a slight edge in total offense with 422 yards to 416 for BSU.

Behind three first half rushing touchdowns by Keith Brown the Bulldogs opened up a 21-3 lead with 5:55 left before the intermission. ECSU got their first touchdown of the day with just 59 seconds left in the half on a 6 yard reception from Tyrell Houghton to Javoris Bryant. The Bulldogs' special teams then seized momentum before the half when the point after attempt was blocked and returned for a defensive two points by Darius Clair and Bowie led 23-9 at the break.

With 10:39 left in the third quarter a 33 yard TD run by Petey Boone capped an 11 play, 77 yard drive however the PAT was again blocked by Bowie State. Houghton found Keith Strickland on a 33 yard passing strike with 11:03 left in the game but his two point conversion pass, which would have tied the game, failed and BSU held on to a 23-21 advantage.

Keith Brown then capped a career day with his fourth rushing TD of the day with 6:55 remaining for the game's final point spread. Brown finished the afternoon with 230 of the Bulldogs' 303 rushing yards.

Boone had 127 rushing yards and a touchdown while Strickland, playing in his final game for the Vikings, finished the afternoon with 107 receiving yards and a score.
