Final Stats
NEWBERRY, SC- Newberry College scored four touchdowns in the first half on the way to a 46-20 blowout win over Elizabeth City State University Saturday evening at Setzler Field.
The Vikings committed four costly turnovers in the game, three of which led to direct scores for the Wolves. On the second play of the game, Namon Jones' first pass of the season was intercepted and returned 40 yards for a TD and an early 7-0 lead. The Vikings responded with a solid 13-play, 77 yard drive which ended with a 4 yard rushing TD by Jones to knot the game at 7 apiece.
The Braves bounced back on their next drive, scoring on a 40-yard pass play but missed the extra point for a 13-7 advantage. On ECSU's ensuing possession, the Wolves recovered a fumble at the Viking 24 yard line and two plays later punched it in for a 20-7 lead.
Newberry put together another short scoring drive after recovering another fumble during an ECSU kickoff return at the Viking 30 yard line. Four plays later, the Wolves took a 27-7 lead on a 3-yard run by John Gadson to put the game out of reach.
Freshman Antonio Huff had two impressive catch and run touchdowns from 28 and 19 yards out in the fourth quarter and All-American Daronte McNeill finished with a game high 124 yards on 24 carries.
Jones went for a career best 274 yards on 24-44 passing while the Vikings posted 423 yards of total offense to 356 Newberry. However the Wolves made the most of their scoring opportunities, going 5-5 in the red zone.
