MANLEY, MCNEILL TOO MUCH AS VIKINGS HANDLE BRONCOS 38-26

Sept. 18, 2010

Final Stats

ROCKY MOUNT, NC- Dexter Manley and Daronte McNeill accounted for over 100 yards of offense each as Elizabeth City State University toppled Fayetteville State University 38-26 at the 13th Annual Down East Viking Football Classic Saturday afternoon.

Manley hauled in 6 catches for 115 yards and two touchdowns while McNeill rushed for 121 yards and two scores as the Vikings captured their third straight win over Fayetteville State (1-2 overall).

Special teams miscues spotted FSU 13 points in the game, as the Broncos' Dennis Rorie blocked two punts, both which were returned for scores by Joshua Scales. The first put the Broncos up 13-0 as Scales scooped up the blocked kick and returned it 15 yards to the end zone. The second went from 22 yards out and accounted for the Broncos final score of the contest.

Unfortunately for FSU, it was the time that lapsed between those special teams' scores that proved to be problematic.

A fumble gave ECSU the ball on the FSU 30 and 8 plays later Manley snagged a 4 yard touchdown with 3:23 left in the first half, trimming the lead to 13-10. After the Broncos next possession ended on downs Manley made them pay with an 8 yard TD reception capping a 5 play 63 yard drive that took only 36 seconds.

After trailing 13-0 in the first quarter, ECSU went in the locker room at halftime with a 17-13 lead.

McNeill would own the second half, scoring both his touchdowns after the intermission. His scores went for 8 and 7 yards and he finished the contest with a season high 24 carries. After the Broncos early 13-0 lead, the Viking defense pitched a shutout until Richard Medlin broke for a 47 yard rushing touchdown with 27 seconds left the 3rd quarter. ECSU quickly negated that score on their ensuing possession when Creven Powell and Billy Wiggins hooked up for a 49 yard touchdown.

The Broncos weren't able to keep pace as ECSU scored touchdowns on 5 consecutive possessions spanning the second and fourth quarters. Defensively the Vikings held Fayetteville to 239 yards of total offense. The Vikings generated 449 yards on offense and ran 88 plays to 51 plays from scrimmage for the Broncos.

The Vikings (2-1) will return to action next Saturday when they host Shaw University at Roebuck Stadium in Elizabeth City. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00pm. For more information on ECSU Athletics, visit www.ecsuvikings.com.
