LAWRENCEVILLE, VA- It was not pretty but the Elizabeth City State University Vikings managed to escape the Saint Paul's Tigers with a 7-3 win Saturday afternoon.
With the win ECSU notches its first 8-win season since 1981 and remain undefeated in the CIAA with a perfect 6-0 record.
The Vikings will now prepare for the Virginia Union University Panthers for on Saturday, November 4th at 2:00pm. The Panthers, who are one game behind ECSU in the race for the Eastern Division crown, defeated Bowie State on Saturday 9-7. The winner of the game in Elizabeth City will earn a birth in the 2006 CIAA Football Championship game in Durham on November 11th.
The Tigers gained a 3-0 advantage on a 42-yard field goal by Shaun Gutierrez with 4:10 remaining in the first half. Saint Paul's would carry that lead into the intermission and with that became the first team this season to hold the Vikings scoreless in the first half. ECSU finally got on the board with 6 seconds remaining in the 3rd quarter on a 4-yard touchdown by Brandon Fields and the Vikings would hold on from there for the win
