ROCKY MOUNT, NC- The Saint Augustine's College Falcons shutout the Elizabeth City State University Vikings 7-0 at the 7th Annual Down East Viking Football Classic Saturday night in Rocky Mount, NC.
The game's only score came on the very first play from scrimmage when Falcon quarterback Daryl Nesbitt completed a 68-yard touchdown pass to Eddie Montgomery. That one-play drive, which took all of 23 seconds, would be the most excitement either team would display offensively as the duration of the game consisted of hard-hitting defensive play. On the Falcons' ensuing offensive set, starting from their own 20-yard line, SAC put together an impressive drive that, 14 plays later found them first and goal on the Vikings' 4-yard line. The ECSU defense then denied the Falcons for four downs, three times halting them on the Viking 1-yard line. Field positioning due to the brilliant punting of kickers Sintell Crew (SAC) and Kevin Dodson (ECSU) would as integral a part as the play of the defenses. Crew finished with 355 yards on 8 punts while Dodson amassed 449 yards via 11 punts including a long of 55 yards. Six of Dodson's punts pinned the Falcons inside their own 20-yard line.
Penalties were also a major factor in the 7-0 outcome as the two teams combined for 19 flags for 265 yards. Defensively the Falcons were paced by Alex Hall who finished with 9 tackles and a sack for a loss of 5 yards. For the Vikings, Emanuel Plummer and Maceo Thomas each contributed 13 tackles apiece, with Thomas adding 2 sacks and 2 quarterback hurries. The Falcons improve to 5-0, CIAA 2-0 while the Vikings slip to 1-4, 0-2 in the CIAA.
The Vikings will travel to Petersburg, VA on Saturday, October 1, 2005 to face Virginia State University. Game time is scheduled for 1:30pm. For more information on ECSU athletics, log onto www.ecsuvikings.com.
