Coach Sumter

Maurice Sumter

Maurice Sumter returns for his second season as an assistant coach for the Lady Vikings basketball program, bringing a deep background as both a player and coach across the high school, collegiate, and professional levels.

Most recently, Sumter has made his mark on the sidelines. He spent the 2016–17 season as an assistant at Harcum Junior College, helping guide the team to a 22-9 record and a regular season conference championship. Prior to that, he served as a volunteer assistant at Old Dominion University (2015) and Shaw University (2014). Sumter launched his coaching career at Indian River High School in Chesapeake, Virginia, spending four seasons as an assistant. He also worked two summers with Adidas Gauntlet powerhouse Team Loaded (NC), where he helped coach and recruit some of the nation’s top high school prospects.

Before stepping into coaching, Sumter played three years professionally overseas with stops in Holland, Portugal, and Macedonia. His pro career followed a decorated run at Longwood University, where he made history as the school’s first-ever Division I men’s basketball recruit. Sumter went head-to-head with more than 15 future NBA players and consistently stood out, leading the Lancers in scoring and steals in both his junior and senior seasons while ranking second in rebounding and blocks. A two-time First Team All-Independent selection and Third Team All-State honoree, he was also named Longwood’s Male Athlete of the Year. By the end of his career, he ranked in the program’s top five all-time in scoring, rebounding, assists, steals, and blocks, and ESPN later recognized him as one of the top five players in Longwood history.

Sumter’s roots trace back to T.C. Williams High School in Alexandria, Virginia, where he starred for one of the state’s premier programs. He helped the Titans post a 25-4 record and reach the regional semifinals while earning All-District Player of the Year, First Team All-Region, and All-Metropolitan honors in the D.C. area.
