Trey Sumler

Trey Sumler is in his first year as an assistant coach at Elizabeth City State University.
He previously was the Head coach at his alma mater Nash Central High School. After accepting the job at Nash Central he spent 1 season there in attempt to restore the program before his departure.
From 2014-2017 Sumler played professionally in Denmark, Switzerland, and Greece including being drafted by the Erie BayHawks in the 2015 NBA D-league draft.
Prior to his professional career Sumler attended Western Carolina University where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business Entrepreneurship. During his playing career at WCU, Sumler became one of the most decorated players in the school’s history. Sumler’s career got off to a fast start as he earned the conference award for Freshman of the Year in the 2010-2011 season. While being named 1st team All-conference in the SOCON his junior and senior seasons, he was also named an all-tournament performer on 3 different occasions. Sumler finished his career at WCU ranking number 1 all-time in games started (121), number 3 all-time in total points scored (1996), and top 8 all-time in 12 other major categories.
Sumler is a 2009 graduated of Nash Central High School. While there he became Nash Central’s all-time leader in points, steals, and assist. As a 4-time all-conference selection, Sumler also was named the NEW-6 conference Player of the Year in 2008-2009.
When asked why he decided to take this job offer from ECSU and coach Andre Gray, Sumler stated “It was a no brainer for me. Coach Gray has been long time mentor for me so when he made that call it all came back full circle. He is the main reason I ended up at Western Carolina to play basketball as he recruited me and gave me opportunity to play at the collegiate level. It was almost what they call deja-vu as he came and got me from Nash Central High as a player and history repeats itself as he came and gave me another chance to enter the college game, but this time as a coach. We’ve kept in contact over the years discussing life and different basketball situations. I most certainly believe in his vision and where he wants to take the program and I’m excited about the start here.”
