Vikings Fall in 28th Down East Classic

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- Elizabeth City State had a hard time getting anything going in the 28th Down East Viking Classic on Saturday, falling 51-8 to Fayetteville State at the Rocky Mount Sports Complex.

The Vikings' lone touchdown came midway through the second quarter when Andre Staley & Sean Worthy paired up to make a huge special teams play. Both broke through the line of scrimmage at the same time, with Staley making the block and Worthy right there to make the scoop and score. The following extra point FG attempt was blocked and picked up by offensive lineman Toriono Combs, who rumbled three yards into the endzone for two points. The wild play seemed to give the Vikings some momentum to chip back to a a 21-8 defecit, but the Broncos held firm the rest of the game.

Quarterback Christopher Perkins led ECSU with 59 passing yards, while Ameil Braswell and Troy Smith each added 19 receiving yards to pace the offense. On the ground, the Vikings were limited to just 41 net rushing yards, with Braswell leading the way.

Defensively, Chris Calhoun finished with a team-high eight tackles, while Jaevon Branch added seven stops, including two tackles for loss. Sean Worthy also contributed on both defense and special teams with four tackles and a pass breakup.

Punter Darius Satterfield was busy throughout the afternoon, averaging 42.5 yards on eight attempts with a long of 62.

With the loss, ECSU falls to 0-4 overall and 0-1 in CIAA play. The Vikings have a bye week to regroup, then return home to Roebuck Stadium on Saturday, October 4, to host Livingstone in a 1 p.m. kickoff.
