Vikings Battle but Fall to Fayetteville State in CIAA Home Matchup

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (Dec. 4, 2025) — Elizabeth City State put together one of its strongest offensive efforts of the season but came up short in a 73–59 loss to Fayetteville State on Wednesday night at the R.L. Vaughan Center.

ECSU (0–5, 0–2 CIAA) traded early blows with the Broncos, pulling within 23–21 late in the first half before FSU closed on a 7–2 run to take a 30–23 lead into halftime. The Vikings continued to compete throughout the second half, twice trimming the deficit to single digits, but Fayetteville State responded each time behind efficient perimeter shooting and strong guard play.

Freshman center Donovan Flamer delivered a standout performance off the bench, posting 17 points and 10 rebounds, and four blocks, for the Vikings' first double-double of the season. Braylon Wheeler added 7 points and 4 assists, while Terence Thorbs, Anthony Djami-Tchoula, and Daniel Nixon each chipped in 6 points.

Fayetteville State (5–2, 1–0 CIAA) was powered by the trio of Ezekiel Cannedy (24 points, six threes), Larry Howell (19 points, 9 rebounds), and Romeo Aquino (13 points, team-high 11 rebounds). The Broncos shot 48% in the second half and 42% from three, using an 11-for-15 stretch at the free-throw line after the break to stay in control.

ECSU's reserves outscored FSU 38–7, but the Broncos capitalized on timely threes and second-half paint touches to maintain separation. ECSU finished the night shooting 36% from the field and 16-of-22 at the line.

The Vikings have a quick turnaround, heading to Barton College on Saturday for a 4 pm tipoff.
