Elizabeth City, NC- After the storm passed and the winds ceased, it was finally time to play football in Elizabeth City. The Elizabeth City State Vikings (1-3) would look to obtain a conference victory, versus Shaw University (1-3) on Sunday Afternoon. The Vikings would score 17 unanswered points in the second half, but would fall short to the Shaw Bears 17-20.
Donoven Davenport, would step in at the Quarterback position for the Vikings and try to steady the ship. Davenport would record two turnovers, after having a scoring play called back due to offensive holding, which has plagued the Vikings offense this season. Coming out of the half, Davenport would connect with
Elijah Starkey for a 63-yard touchdown at the 2:18 mark in the third quarter. With time dwindling in the fourth quarter, Davenport would connect with
Ian Edwards for a late 8-yard touchdown to bring the Vikings within three points.Edwards would have six receptions for 67-yards on the day,
Zechariah Adams-Duckson would tally 33 rushing yards.
Demorian Smith would be the Code Blue performer of the game recording 11 total tackles and be involved on key stops throughout the day. He would get assist from defensive lineman
Jaylen Dollar as he would record 1 sack and two tackles for loss and add 6 tackles.
Teonne Porter in the defensive backfield would try to be the energy from beginning to end of the game and it translated in 7 total tackles, a pass breakup, and a tackle for loss. The second half surge leading to the Vikings outscoring the Bears 17-0Â in the second half would not be enough to overcome the 20-0 deficit they put themselves in at half.
The Vikings return to action Saturday, September 30, for homecoming as they face Johnson C. Smith. Kickoff is at 1:00 p.m.
