Vikings Football Fall To Catawba In Home Opener

Elizabeth City, NC - The Viking Football team (0-1) made a fighting effort, but to no avail, fell to the Catawba football team at Roebuck Stadium.

The Vikings opened up the game with an interception on the first pass attempt but would quickly avenge that drive after a defensive stop from the active Viking defense. Sophomore quarterback, Chase Williams, found Grad transfer, Ian Edwards for a 43-yard bomb.

Catawba would answer in the second quarter when Quarterback, Preston Brown found receiver Bo Pryor for a 28-yard touchdown pass to tie the game. With help from a personal foul, the Vikings would find themselves back in the red zone and capitalized with a QB sneak with Chase Williams moving his scoring total to two total touchdowns with one in the air and one on the ground. The Vikings would go into halftime down by a score of 21-14.

Demorian Smith and Teonne Porter led all Viking tacklers on the day and seemed to be flying all around the field for the defense. With costly turnovers, the defense was forced to play several short-field situations resulting in the addition of a Catawba field goal and touchdown thrusting the score to 31-14.

The Vikings would find grit and fight when freshman kicker, Carson Hancock gave the Vikings life with a 44-yard field goal. Cory Marshall had a timely reception to keep an essential Viking drive alive, however, the drive would stall. Special Teamer, Carlton Hunt, showed up big when needed, recovering a muffed punt, that would lead to a Darian King 20-yard rushing Touchdown.

The Vikings would fall to Catawba with a final score of 31-23. Catawba has proven to have the Vikings number and moved the overall meeting record to (3-0).

The Vikings return to action on September 9, in the annual Down East Viking Football Classic as they face off against Saint Augustine's University, in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, at the Rocky Mount Sports Complex slated for a 1 PM kickoff.
