Baltimore, Md. – The No. 10 Clalfin University cinderella run came to an end Wednesday, Feb. 23 as the No. 2 seeded Lady Vikings of Elizabeth City State University topped the Lady Panthers, 70-61 during the quarterfinal round of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Men's and Women's Basketball Tournament in Royal Farms Arena.
With the win, ECSU advances to the semifinals and will face the winner of #3 Bowie State and #11 Virginia State on Friday, Feb. 25 at 12 p.m.
The Lady Vikings led 16-12 after one quarter of action but in the second stanza, both teams tallied 14 points apiece as both teams posted seven points each in the last six minutes of the half with Claflin trialing Elizabeth City State, 30-26 at intermission.
Things got interesting the third quarter, highlighted by five lead changes. A 3-pointer from Iya Holley-Reid led to a 4-0 mini run in the last minute for the Lady Vikings who stood 52-49 at the end of the frame. Both teams exchanged baskets the entire fourth quarter but a layup from Naterria Luster turned into a 3-point effort for the Lady Vikings and a 66-61 lead with 1:08 remaining. ECSU closed out the contest with four-straight free throws to ice the game.
ECSU was led by Luster with 17 points while Holley-Reid and Felicia Jackson aided 16 and 14 points, respectively.
Claflin's Breanna Price led all scorers with 18 points, followed by a 12-point effort from Destiny Coleman.
