ELIZABETH CITY, NC- The Elizabeth City State University Vikings volleyball team defeated Greensboro College 3-1 (18-25, 25-18, 25-18, 25-20) on the road Thursday night improving to a 5-2 overall record.
Â
Freshman
Jada Rouse (Rock Hill, SC) recorded personal bests with 14 points and 13 kills. Junior
Elizabeth Kellum (Jacksonville, NC) led the Vikings in Assists (22), and Alexus "Dani" Elliot (Dudley, NC) led the Vikings in blocks with six.Â
Â
"Tonight's game was another success for the team," said Rouse. "We had some struggles in the first set, which caused us to drop the set, but we battled in the next three sets—showing them in their home what we can do. Thursday will be a big day for us as it is our first home game against Chowan, and we are so excited to play in front of our crowd and show them what we do!"
Â
Back-to-back CIAA Player of the Week honoree
Aasia McNeill (Statesville, NC) led the Vikings in digs with 27.Â
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:Â
A slow start hurt the Vikings in the first set after allowing Greensboro to score five unanswered points. However, in the second and third sets, the Vikings dominated Greensboro from start to finish.Â
Â
"Gritty win tonight," said head coach
David Brooks. It was not our best night offensively, but our defense picked up our offense. Sixteen blocks and 102 digs will win you a lot of games."
Â
The Vikings jumped out in front of Greensboro 9-3, but The Pride did not back down. Greensboro was able to claw their way back into the set and tie the score at 13-all. Although The Pride fought to extend the game into a fifth set, the Vikings remained composed and created a scoring gap down the stretch to secure the win and end the night.Â
Â
The Vikings will be back in action for their home opener Thursday night in the R.L. Vaughan Center, hosting the Hawks of Chowan University at 6 p.m.
