Viking Redemption in 3-1 Win Over VSU

Box Score Elizabeth City, NC – The Vikings avenged themselves against Virginia State by defeating the Trojans 3-1, on Tuesday night in the R.L Vaughn Center. After falling to VSU in their earlier meetup this season, ECSU the matchup was redemption for the Vikings.   
 
The Vikings (25-4, 12-2 CIAA) defeated the Trojans (13-9, 11-3 CIAA) in four sets at 15-25, 25-9, 25-19, 26--24. 
 
Freshman Jada Rouse (Rock Hill, SC) and junior Aasia McNeil (Statesville, NC) provided a huge spark for the Vikings throughout the match. Rouse ended the night with 17 kills and ten digs, and McNeill totaled 14 kills, 13 digs, and two aces. Junior Elizabeth Kellum (Jacksonville, NC) had 35 assists to lead the team and contributed five kills, nine digs, and a lone ace. 
 
The Trojans took on an early lead after a scoring run to establish some momentum. Despite their best efforts, the Vikings were unable to close the gap throughout the set, allowing for the Trojans to have a clear path to the end. VSU would take the set 25-15. 
 
ECSU came out ready to rumble and did just that in the second set. Controlling the set from start to finish, the Vikings went on multiple scoring runs that left the Trojans defenseless. An 8-0 run initiated by several VSU errors gave the Vikings some breathing room by the midway point. ECSU claimed the set 25-9, 
 
The third set started with a scoring run from ECSU, jumping to a 6-1 lead over the Trojans highlighted by kills from Alexus "Dani" Elliot (Dudley, NC) and Rouse. VSU chipped away at the ECSU lead coming within one at 15-14, but the Vikings offense couldn't be stopped and the home crowd made sure of it. ECSU continued to pull ahead outscoring the Trojans 10-5 . The Vikings finished the set 29-19 the final blow was a kill by McNeil.
 
With Elizabeth City up 2-1, the Trojans jumped out to an early lead to start the set, forcing the Vikings to fight back from a 1-9 score. As the Vikings fought their way back into the game, both teams would trade points and kills making it an exciting evening. The Vikings went on a four-point run, closing the lead to one point and it was clear that they were ready to defend home. ECSU cut the score to 12-13. The Trojans held on to their lead until the Vikings secured a kill from McNeil, and a block from junior middle Elliot to tie the set at 24-24. Another kill from McNeil, followed by a huge block from Elliot, sealed the deal and won the set at 26-24 for the Vikings. 
 
The Vikings host Shaw University on Thursday, November 4th at 6 pm in the R.L Vaughn Center.
