Explosive First Quarter Leads to Vikings 72-58 Win over VSU

ELIZABETH CITY, NC- The Lady Vikings ousted the Trojans of Virginia State University to clinch a 72-58 victory on Saturday.  
 
The Vikings improve to 9-17 overall on the season, 5-9 in the CIAA.
 
Senior forward Devona Stell (Atlanta,GA) put the Vikings on her back, recording another double-double  finishing the day with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Sophomore Guard Asia Deal followed up with 16 points, and Felicia Jackson rounded out the double-digit scoring for the Vikings with 10 points on the night.
 
The Trojans were led on both ends of the floor by Autumn Hopson with 13 points and 9 rebounds.
 
ECSU shot 45.3 percent from the field, 42.9 percent from behind the arc, and 65.2 percent at the line.
 
VSU shot 27 percent from the field, 32 percent from behind the arc, and 76.2 percent at the line. 
 
The Vikings played a sound defensive game today tallying seven blocks, eight steals, and out rebounding VSU 43-39.
 
A 10-0 run down the stretch in the first quarter gave the Vikings a 21-11 lead going into the second stanza. 
 
ECSU opened up the second quarter with a 7-0 run and closed the quarter out with a dagger from behind the arc from Deal to lead VSU 39-21 at the half. 
 
The Vikings and Trojans split the scoring advantage in the second half as ECSU outscored VSU 21-19 in the third quarter and VSU outscored ECSU 18-12 in the final quarter. 
 
ECSU dominated the Trojans inside scoring 22 points in the paint to assist in the 72-58 victory.
 
The Vikings will be back in action on Wednesday to take on the Falcons of Saint Augustine at 5:30 p.m. for the last home game of the season.
