BOWIE, Md. -- The Elizabeth City State University softball team splits a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Northern Division doubleheader with Bowie State University on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1:  Stephanie Komives sacrifice flied to left field in the top of the third, to plate Sarah Phillips and ignite the runs for Elizabeth City State. Later in the inning, Hailey Ryan scored off an Alyssa Griffin double to right center, adding a 2-0 lead. The Bulldogs answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the fourth off a pass ball, making it 2-1.
 
ECSU's Komives added an unearned run in the top of the fifth, before BSU came rumbling back. Bowie tallied two runs in the bottom of the fifth, and collected another in the bottom of the sixth to take a 4-3 lead. Griffin recorded another double in the seventh to bring home Komives and knot the game at 4-all.
 
The Bulldogs would answer again in the bottom of the seventh to take a 5-4 advantage and the contest.      

Game 2: ECSU would respond to the game one upset. Being down 1-0 after the fourth inning, Shea Vaccaro crossed the plate on an unearned run, knotting the contest at 1-all. A sacrifice fly off the bat of Alyssa Griffin plated Sydney Smith in the top of the fifth inning, gifting the Vikings a 2-1 advantage. BSU would not go away, after adding another run in the bottom of the sixth. Elizabeth City State recorded three more runs in the top of the seventh, taking a 5-2 lead off hits from D'Asya Wilson and Cheyan Brasseur.
 
Bowie State collected three runs in the bottom of the seventh to ty the contest, but in the bottom of top of the eighth, Vaccaro scored off a wild pitch and sealed the contest for ECSU.
 
Next up: The Vikings will face Lincoln (PA) in Lincoln, Pa. on Monday at Noon and 2:00 p.m. in their CIAA season finale.
