Vikings Softball Advances to CIAA Tournament for the First Time Since, 2007 after Defeating Lincoln (PA)

ASTON, Pa. -- The Elizabeth City State University softball team advances to the 2019 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Conference Tournament after defeating Lincoln (PA) in a Northern Division doubleheader matchup Monday on the road.  

THE BASICS

Location: ASTON, Pa. (MSI Field 1)

Game 1 – ECSU 16, LINCOLN 0 (5 Innings)
Game 2 - ECSU 14, BSU 0 (5 Innings)

ECSU Record following Saturday's action: 11-15 Overall, 9-8 CIAA

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1:  Both teams were held scoreless in the first inning. The Vikings took a 4-0 lead in the top of the second inning off a double from (Co-CIAA Player of the Week) Cheyan Brassuer and Sydney Smith. Sarah Phillips and Hailey Ryan also added singles in the inning that led to runs for ECSU.
 
Elizabeth City State then tallied three more runs in the third inning, making it a 7-0 contest. In the fifth, the Vikings went on a tear and did not let up, scoring nine runs off eight hits and an error to take a commanding 16-0 lead and the ballgame.
 
Smith went 4-for-4 with four RBI and three runs, while Brassuer went 3-for-4 with three runs scored. DeeDee Irwin and Fifia Waithe were the only two Lions to record a hit during the contest. Shea Vaccaro threw five innings, gave up two hits, while striking out six batters.  

Game 2: A single off the bat of Camryn West, plated Stephanie Komives (Defensive Player of the Week) and Alyssa Griffin, gifting the Vikings a 2-0 lead. Smith and Phillips collected singles and scored in the first inning as well. ECSU jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the top of the first and never looked back.  
 
The Lions tallied four hits but were scoreless throughout the contest. Phillips went 4-for-4 on the day with a run and a RBI, while Vaccaro went 2-for-2 at the plate with three runs. The Vikings recorded 14 runs on 15 hits and 12 RBI. Vaccaro gave up four hits and struck out five in the outing.
 
Tierra Russaw led Lincoln (PA) with a hit in three at bats.
  
Next up: The Vikings enter the tournament as the third seed in the CIAA Northern Division and will compete April 29th. Time and opponent has not been determined yet.
