ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (Feb. 9, 2019) – Chowan rode a 30-point third quarter explosion to a 78-61 CIAA win over Elizabeth City State in the Robert L. Vaughan Center.
Senior guard Jordan Pettaway scored nine of her team-high 15 points and junior guard Mariah Coker dropped in two of her game-high four 3-point jumpers as the Hawks (12-11, CIAA 8-5, North Div. 2-4) outscored the Vikings (13-11, CIAA 5-8, North Div. 2-4), 30-14, in the third period to seize control of the game.

Jalyn Brown led all scorers with 18 points while adding six rebounds and a team-high four assists for ECSU which lost its third straight divisional game. Junior forward

DeNayia Holmes score nine points for ECSU, but ECSU got just two points from its bench in the game.
Coker, who scored 14 points, hit four of 10 shots from beyond the arc for Chowan to help the visitors connect on eight of 24 attempts while the Vikings made just two of seven treys. Coker dished out a game-high five assists while Pettaway contributed five rebounds as the Hawks snapped a four-game losing streak in the division while earning a split with ECSU for the season.
Senior guard Jada Lee totaled 12 points, five rebounds and three assists while senior forward Danielle Weldon registered 10 points and seven rebounds. Senior guard Joanne Williams chipped in eight points to go along with a team-high seven rebounds.
Chowan got 19 points from its reserves and posted 26 points off Viking turnovers to spell the difference in the game. The Hawks led 59-46 after 30 minutes and ECSU could not muster a late charge.
There were six ties and six lead changes in the first half highlighted by a pair of runs to finish the second quarter with ECSU clinging to a 30-29 edge. After Lee opened the second period with a jumper to give the Hawks an 18-14 lead, the Vikings reeled off a 15-2 run to take a 29-20 lead. Brown, who had five points during the spree, capped the spurt with a jumper with two minutes on the clock. Chowan closed out the half on a 9-1 flurry with Coker nailing a trey from the left corner with just five seconds left.
ECSU hosts Lincoln (PA) Wednesday in a CIAA doubleheader in the Vaughan Center. The women's tip off is set for 5:30 p.m. with the men to follow at 7:30.
