ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (Feb. 23, 2019) – Bowie State exploded for 22 second-period points to upend Elizabeth City State, 68-46, in a regular-season ending CIAA game on Senior Day in the Robert L. Vaughan Center.
Senior guard
Jalyn Brown, a four-year letterwinner, a 1,000-point scorer and a 2018 All-CIAA first-team selection, played her final contest in the Vaughan Center. The Williamston, N.C., native tallied 11 points, three steals and two assists in her home finale.
Junior forward
Devona Stell tied Brown for team scoring honors with 11 points while posting a game-high nine rebounds plus three steals before fouling out late in the contest. Freshman guard
Asia Deal came up with a game-high four steals to go along with seven points and a pair of assists for ECSU (13-15, CIAA 5-12, North Div. 2-8).
Junior forward Kyaja Williams had seven of her 15 points during a 12-0 run which staked Bowie State to a 26-15 lead with 5:01 left in the first half. The Bulldogs turned nine Vikings turnovers into nine points while their bench provided 17 points in the second quarter as the visitors powered out to a 36-22 halftime advantage. Williams finished with a team-high eight rebounds and three steals.
Viking junior forward
Naterria Luster knocked down three consecutive jumpers to give ECSU a 15-12 lead with just 11 ticks left in the opening period before a jumper by junior guard Chyna Butler set the margin at one point at the end of the quarter. Luster totaled eight points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals.
ECSU sliced its deficit to 38-30 just two minutes into the third period on a pair of free throws by Deal before Bowie State (22-4, CIAA 14-3, North Div. 7-3) pulled away to lead by as many as 24 points. It was the Bulldogs' sixth straight win – all in the North Division.
Bowie State, which will enter the next week's CIAA Tournament as the second seed from the North Division, got a game-high 16 points from senior forward Pere Alexander who connected on nine of 11 free throws. Junior guard Shawnkia McCallum chipped in seven points, three rebounds and three steals for the Bulldogs.
